Art never before exhibited is now up in the main office, so stop by, say hello and peek at some new student projects.
All art club members should check in weekly for the listing of project teams and new assignments -- especially if you miss a meeting and/or are tracked out. Fun projects exclusive to our club are announced there, so don't miss
All Mrs. Barlow's Track 4 Art Students are dearly missed during their time off! Have a relaxing break!
Don't forget about the art exhibit and opening at Cary Ballet Company tomorrow from 2:30 until 5:30. If you cannot attend to see some of our talented student work:) no worries since your art teacher intends to go to take pictures during the event and will post the news! We also missed you all at our Art Club meeting this week. Hope you check in to our site here and encourage friends and family to do the same since it is always changing.
Mrs. Barlow is happy to announce that several LRMS art students' acrylic paintings will be on display October 5 - 23 at the Cary Ballet Company. The opening event is scheduled for Saturday, October 5th from 2:30 - 5:30pm. But if you cannot attend that day, consider stopping by the studio to view our students' work on weekdays until 9pm or Saturdays from 9am - 3pm.
Each year, Cary Ballet Company sponsors ‘Celebration of Children in the Arts’ event the first Saturday in October at 3791 NW Cary Parkway (near Preston Corners). This event is open to the public free of charge and will feature local young people in performing and visual arts. There will be continuous performing groups including dance, Triangle Youth String Sinfonia, Raleigh Youth Magic and performers from Paper Hand Intervention. Make & Take crafts will be offered, and visual art from different area schools will be on display.
Students selected to participate in this exhibit are currently enrolled in Mrs. Barlow's eighth-grade, track 4 art class. Thank you for promoting the arts in our community, and congratulations Morgan, Haley, Jenna, Robin, Christy, Amanda, Bailey, Lyric, Lucy, Deven, James and Lexi!
Should your Art Box plan be approved, you will be selected to participate in this unique opportunity!
The Art Box Volunteer Project is open to all Lufkin Road Middle School Art Club members. In order to receive a box, you must submit a tight comprehensive theme design for approval and turn in this contract. Once your box is issued, you may work alone or with a partner. Our working deadline is February 1. Art Club meetings may be designated to work on this project, and you may choose to work on your own or with a partner.
These unique antique wooden boxes have an interesting history. Measuring 8.25” high, 6” wide and 6” deep, the boxes were once long-time fixtures serving as stacked filing drawers at Elliot’s Pharmacy in downtown Fuquay-Varina. When the drugstore closed this past year, the owners generously donated them for use in our art program. Each will be creatively “up-cycled” to a handcrafted piece of art -- either functioning as a type of organizer, or just simply to display as an interesting conversation piece.
By volunteering to complete this project, you are also agreeing to donate your work. The finished Art Boxes will be included in a silent auction in the February 21st fundraiser sponsored by our PTA. This is a wonderful opportunity for us as Art Club members to give back to our school and promote the arts in our community at the same time. So “mark your calendar” for the February 21st Silent Auction. Your parents may want to bid on your fabulously original piece of art!

September 4, 2013
To all Lufkin Road Middle School Art Club Students and their Parents:
Just a reminder that we will be having Art Club tomorrow afternoon from 2:15-3:15 pm as scheduled. Please plan to pick up at the bus loop between 3:15 and 3:30pm.
However, I am also remaining at school with any art club students that wish to take one of the activity busses home at 4:45. As long as they have a note from home or you contact me to let me know, I am glad to stay and make sure they get on the bus for home. Please confirm with our school the bus they take and where the bus drops them off. Once we figure it out the first time, this could be a great advantage to parents. I know! I'm a parent too.
The art students who are staying for Art Club are extremely well-behaved and eager to work. I am encouraged and impressed by these talented young adults. I remind them that it is a privilege to belong to a club such as this, to be mindful that they are held accountable as members -- and they are fortunate to have parents who support them in their educational and extra-curricular activities. But I believe I am just as fortunate to have parents' support since I get to witness their collaborating and focusing on service work.
I would also like to thank Kate's mother for coming to our last meeting and taking the time to assist us when she can. If any parents are flexible to join us for any meeting, I welcome you and enjoy so much getting to know you ... and having someone else to make sure all of our teams are working effectively and efficiently on our many projects!
I am delighted to announce that I have created this link just for Lufkin Art from our school site so that parents and students may check the latest art club news, see artwork from school exhibits and, especially, go on to get any updates. Therefore, I am no longer going to email Art Club News, but will update the blog page regularly for your convenience. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and I will be glad to answer to any of these so that all parents may easily get answers.

Dear Parents of Art Club Participants,
Thank you for arranging your schedule so your child can attend art club meetings! As we had our initial meeting last Thursday, the students as a group made many decisions about how business will be conducted and we will have members appointed to take attendance, keep time and several secretaries (different tracks) to help us stay organized.
First, we made a change: pick up is at the bus loop instead of carpool from now on. Since I’m new to Lufkin, I now realize this is probably more convenient for all of us.
Second, it is not mandatory for a student to attend any of the Art Club Meetings while he or she is tracked out. However, if the member knows they will not be attending any other time, please send me an email, note or leave a message.
The students discussed that if a member has to miss more than 5 meetings, they probably need to consider resignation from the club. Furthermore they agreed that if someone chooses not to attend two or more meetings while on a design team, the team has the right to drop them. Frankly with the manpower that we have, I don’t see many long term projects. But I understand their point – that if a few are “doing all of the work and someone comes in at the last meeting and takes credit, that might not be fair”. The returning member may join another team since we will have many consecutive/overlapping opportunities to serveJ
Instead of club dues for membership, our students decided that a “wish list” for supplies that we need will be sent out to art club parents. That way, if you are able to support us by purchasing supplies, sending a donation, providing recycled materials on our wish list or even volunteering your time to help us – we need and welcome your support.
As well, students preferred to bring in snacks that we can store here at school for Art Club only. This is also a volunteer request, so bottled waters and packaged foods like pretzels, granola bars and crackers will work. Please make sure that students with allergies bring their own snack or know exactly what they may eat. (I told them not to make it Doritos and Twinkies every week!)
Our next meeting is this Thursday, August 29 from 2:15-3:15. I am in the process of creating an Art Club link to our school site as well. Thank you for your patience! Please don’t hesitate to email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions or concerns until then. Thanks again for all of your interest and support,
Beth Barlow, Lufkin Road Middle School Art
Dear Parents of Interested Art Club Participants,
I am pleased that your child is interested in becoming an active member of the Art Club. Our first meeting is Thursday after school at 2:15- 3:15, however, it is not mandatory, this being the first one. Students must have turned in an official enrollment form to attend since it acts as not only a permission slip but has other contact information that we need. We will walk out as a group at 3:15 to the bus loop for pickup by 3:30.
In our first session, we will discuss the objectives of our club and develop together a mission statement that we all will uphold. I believe one of the most important commitments the students make in joining a school club is to conduct themselves as model students since we will be representing our school as a formal organization. Establishing our own set of rules and expectations together will set the tone for the rest of the year and we will be consistent in being accountable as individual players on the team.
I will begin assigning committees to work on different projects that primarily serve our school in many capacities. I believe service within our school walls is a perfect place to start since students get to see the impact of their artwork in their daily surroundings. I would like to work on service projects that benefit and promote the arts in our communities as well. Therefore, if you know of any potential design opportunities out there, don’t hesitate to contact me. Extending ourselves beyond our campus by serving our community is a positive life lesson and a win-win experience for artists and their real-life clients.
I will be keeping a written record of our meetings along with photos and samples of our many “jobs.” As well, I am interested in creating a website link to our school site to exhibit our artwork. Please let me know if you prefer that photos of your child not be incorporated into the art club webpage. I always make a point to not use last names if I refer to students, but I also enjoy providing recognition to winners of competitions or artist students with a successful project. Just let me know your thoughts about this.
If you have time to send an email if a student will be absent from art club, please do since I will be taking roll each Thursday. I will let you know if a meeting has to be cancelledtoo.
I believe that much artistic talent exudes from collaborative sessions like this. We will be learning the best ways to capitalize on our individual strengths while working with others and all the good they have to bring to the table. My design background is showing!
Thanks again for sharing your child with me at Lufkin on Thursday afternoons. I am a parent too and realize how difficult it can be to juggle your schedule. You may always reach me on my cell at 336-504-1866 during the meetings or for last minute change of plans.
